Liger Senior Cookbook

Exploration Name: Liger Senior Cookbook

Exploration Dates: Nov 30, 2015 – Feb 5, 2016

Number of students: 9

We created this Exploration because this year in August we are going to live in the new campus. Also, we will cook dinner and lunch by ourself and we will be less dependent. We divided up the students into three groups such as, recipes researching, photography, and book designing. For recipes researching, they need to research a lot of recipes from online. Then they ordered the ingredients and then cooked it. After that they will need to edit and make sure that all recipes are acceptable for the students to cook. Then they moved the documents that they made to completed folder to make it easier for book designing group. During they were cooking, I and my partner took pictures of important methods and finished products. The pictures that we took we need to give to book designer to put in the book with the edited recipes. Book designing group used two programs to design our book which are, Blurb Bookwright and Adobe Indesign. At the beginning of our class we used Blurb, but then after three weeks we noticed that we can’t print it in Cambodia and it is very expensive to print. So, we changed to use Indesign. BUT it was quite challenging because we need to copy everything from the Blurb and paste it in there.

Something that I learned was that I got to know more about photograph the food. Before I used to be in biography class and I got to take the pictures of people, but that was a long time ago. So, now I get opportunity to improve my skill. Also, during my recipes group cooking, I also help them to cook. So, by now I know a lot of cooking and vocabulary.
One of my highlights was after recipes group cooked, as a photographer I always get chance to taste before them because they were cleaning their stuff. So, I think I was so fortunate to be in this role.

Khmer Interior Designer

This Exploration was so special because this was the first time that we leaded this project by our own. We chose our own topic and we collaborated together to get this done in time. In Phnom Penh there are a lot of buildings are happening and that is the sign of needing more interior designers. Also, in Liger there are a lot of constructions is going on that’s why we take this opportunity to design one apartment. Our goal is to encourage more Khmer interior designers to take over this career by sharing with them at sharation.

At the beginning of this project, we thought that it will be easy just buy the furniture that we like and then put in. BUT actually it wasn’t the same as our thought. We divided up our members into three groups were, designing kitchen+living room, bedrooms, and designing bathroom+toilet. So, my role was to design double bedroom. First, we went to town to meet with our professional interior designers. We asked them some basic questions and some tips. We learned a lot from them. Right now, our apartment nearly done because we need to buy a few more furniture to put in.

Entrepreneurship

This entrepreneurship class is about making chili sauce and sell it. All the students in Liger have to participate in this class. So, we have divide up the students into four groups. I was in the first group. Right now we just finished with second group. So, in my first group we divided our members into four main groups. The first was about production group, which was about making chili sauce in Liger kitchen. The second was about market study, which was about researching our competitors and buying other existing chili sauces to taste. The third group was about advertising and marketing our chilli sauce. The last group, which was the group that I was in was about accounting. My responsibility was to convince our director to give money to us to start our business. We probably had three meetings with him before we got the money. Then we went to request money from our Liger accountant. The two main goals this money were to buy other existing chili sauces and to buy ingredient for our production team.

We also learned entrepreneurship concepts from one curriculum called a+b=c. In this curriculum they showed us different examples and situations in business to help us think more about it. We have made on business plan for this Exploration. But we were not sure if it our final business plan yet because there will be more groups learn about this. So, along the way they might change it. Also, I have made my own business plan about cupcakes.

Programming

First of all, even though I hate programming, but I need to take this Exploration as an experience. So, we had two teachers from America came to teach us from 2-4 pm from Monday to Friday. They taught us very well and I learned a lot from them. In this programming class, I made two projects with my partner. The first one was about hangman game. The second one was about tic tac toe game. We used Python to program this project.

Sanitation

Before I begin talking about sanitation, let’s take a step back and talk about wetlands. So, a wetland is a body water that has a lot of biodiversity live in. There are three types, which are constructed wetland, saltwater wetland, and freshwater wetland. Two biggest advantages that we found out from our Exploration were giving home and food to animals and save the environment. In Cambodia, one of our biggest natural disasters is flood. So, wetlands can help to protect against floods. This is because the plants in the wetlands can absorb the water. So, have wetlands where it has flood, it can save your house and your family.

So, let’s take a step further. Sanitation is the process of managing the waste to keep the environment clean. During our Exploration, we visited two constructed wetlands in Battambang (BBT) and in Siem Reap. They created this wetland to help their village. They absorb that all the wastewater that people use is going into the lake. So, to solve this problem they decided to build this wetland. The constructed wetland at BBT is a small old system. It has three small ponds and four big ponds. Also, it’s tradition constructed wetland and no concrete. At there, this constructed wetland provides a lot of advantages to the people. There are four biggest benefit that we found out which are, making the lake or river cleaner, farmer can water their crops, don’t have bad smell, and can treat water from murky to clean. BUT there are also some challenges. The biggest is that people at their not yet know about the effect of wastewater. Also, they don’t have enough money and don’t have people to maintain it.

Science Story Book

One of the biggest project in Liger is Science Story Book. This mean that each student will pair with another student, who are interest at the same topic. In fact, they will create a fiction book based on their topic. This book is not just in one language, it will be in both Khmer and English because we are going to share this book with the students in the government school too. I paired up with another boy who is interested in Earth Science. Our topic was about rock cycle. In the first month, we spent our time on doing research. Then we started to write our book in the document. I am the one who wrote the book. My partner is the one that do the art in Gimp, Inkscape, and Photoshop. After I write my book, we need to check it with English learning facilitators about the content and what the picture should look like. Also, we need to check the grammar because as you know we are still learning English. After finished with English, my partner continue to do his responsible and I translated it into Khmer. Then checked the translation with Khmer learning facilitators. Finally we put it into Bookwright program. But, we haven’t finished yet. Do you know why? Because when we put the text in, the space between each word got messy. I mean for English was okay, but Khmer was very disorganized. So, I need to fixed it. Next, we presented to everyone in Liger by giving them demonstration about our book. Then we read to each other. The language that we presented to them was in English. How about Khmer? We invited about 20 community students to come to listen to our book and ask them if they understand our book or not. In this project, we need to focus on it a lot. Also, we had to work efficiently not doing something that is not related to the book.

Our book called “The Adventure of Rasy and the Rock Cycle”.Capture     9

CPR (Help Your Life)

In my school, most students and I had chosen one topic to learn about it. Also, you just don’t choose any topic to learn, but you chose the topic that you are passionate and curious about. So, I chose CPR because I am interested in it and I really want to help other people when they have a heart attack. Every Tuesday from 12:40 – 2:00 pm I had to do a lot of research to complete this topic. I spent about one month to accomplish this, but in every week I only did on one day. So, in total I only did this topic in four days. So, if there is any confusion or questions or you think it is wrong, you can comment at the bottom of the page.

What is CPR?
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) means a way of trying to save someone’s life who has stopped breathing and whose heart has stopped beating etc,. There are two ways to do CPR: mouth-to-mouth or chest compression.

What is the background behind CPR?
In 1956 Peter Safar and James Elam invented mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Then in 1957 United States military think that mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is very helpful, so they take that to teach their military incase their heart has stopped beating. Since 1960 CPR was developed. In 1981 Dr. Friedrich Maass performed the first chest compression in humans.
History about CPR

What is the purpose of CPR?
The main purpose is to restore partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart. If the heat stopped beating that is mean no blood are moving, so the blood can’t bring oxygen to your cell. If your cell don’t get enough oxygen you will die, so someone have to do CPR to you because you are really need oxygen to be able to breathe.

How to do chest compression?
Tips:
-hands are straight on the center of the chest
-one hand cross over another hand (straight hands)
-use your palm to push down 2 inches deep
-100 compressions per a minute

Summary:
-Check if the scene is safe
-Make sure that person lay on a flat surface
-Tap the person’s shoulders to check for response “ARE YOU OK?”
-If no response, shout for help
-If someone responds – have them call to emergency number
-Check the pulse for no more than 10 seconds (at neck or hand)
-Begin to do CPR
-Put hands on breastbones
-Arms straight above the chest
-Push hard and fast, 2 inches deep
-Repeat compression until AED1 arrives

Why they stop doing mouth-to-mouth CPR?
In 2010, (International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation) studies and found that breathing (mouth-to-mouth) wasn’t necessary. Also, it is help less than chest compression and it is too complicated to do it.

Important Note
If you get to train, you can do 30 compressions with two breathe, but if you are not the trainer, better to do only chest compressions.

You don’t need to do CPR to the person that doesn’t have heart attack. If you tap a person, and then they say I am okay, they you don’t need to give CPR to them.

Shared with Other People
On Friday 11, September 2015, there were a water safety presentation at Olympics Stadium pool in Phnom Penh. At there, they showed us how to rescue drowning people. One of the best part of the field trip was when I shared my CPR to some students that were there. I also met one woman who was presenting about CPR to the kids. So, I joined with her and help her to translate to the kids.

Also, there was a group that tries to dive underwater to find bomb that were left under the water. They found one bomb underwater in 2015 May, then they took it out from underwater. They noticed that the bomb was dropped down when America and Vietnam War.

Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport Visit

On 12, January 2016 there were about 40 people came to Liger. They are all the head of the education in Cambodia (secretary of state and principals). They came here because Minister invited them to come and see our teaching philosophy and of course to collaborate with each other. At that day I and another four friends with two teachers presented to them about recruitment. I mean my topic was all about choosing new students to learn at Liger in the next generation. In August 2016 there will be another 50-60 students come to learn in my school. We had four main things to present to them. First was about how many students do we want. Second was about who are we looking for. Third was about how do we access the students. Forth was about what have the teachers learn from doing this. At the end that small group will get to play thinking games that we put for the students.

You know what? At the first time that I presented to them, I have butterflies in my stomach and my hands and legs were shaking. Also, in that day I felt not so well because I had cool, does why my voice was a bit hard to listen. BUT I think I tried my best.

Liger and I are very proud of that day because we didn’t believe that this will happen. So, all the students were confident with their speech and they did very well.

I Go to an Unusual School

I go to an unusual school. My school’s name is Liger Learning Center (LLC). LLC students were selected from many schools in Cambodia. They had to pass many types of tests to come to this school. They were chosen from the families that don’t have enough money for their children to learn English, or go to a private school. LLC is a boarding school with 50 students. Each student takes an Exploration every seven weeks with one learning facilitator and 12 or 13 students. An Exploration is a project that we choose to do in order to learn about something and a project that can help to solve real problems in society. Also, within that Exploration sometimes we have field trips. If we just learn only from the internet, books, or listening to the teacher all the time that’s not the same as if we go on the trip because we can see and learn from the actual situation. I really like this school because when I was in my province, I knew no English. When I came here I learned English and I can talk with foreign people. The best part of this school is becoming a change agent in Cambodia. In the government schools they don’t focus on that. So, it makes me think of what can I do to make my country become better and better. Also, another part that I like the most is going on the field trips because it allows me to learn more from real life.

Technovation

Technovation is a global competition that inspires every girl to join and create an app that can help to change their country. Liger school picked 13 girls to join this program and I was the one of them too. The location that we worked at was DI (Development Innovation) in Phnom Penh (main city). We had three weeks to complete this competition and we did it every weekend. At DI there were not just Liger school girls that joined, we had some girls come from other schools too. So, in all we had five teams (3 teams of all Liger and 2 teams of other schools). For my team, we had five members.  The first week, our mentors told us to think of the ideas that we can help to change Cambodia. I joined with a team of three girls and we came up with the idea of helping farmers and customers. We presented our idea to other girls and to our mentors. A lot of people voted for us, so we had to find two more girls to join in our team. So, two more girls came to our team. We discussed in a team and we had to come up with the name of the team and the app name. Our team name was Ligeek and our app name was ImEx (stands for imports and exports). The second week our mentors introduced us to some basic coding that we will code our app in there. We used appinventor2 to code our app. For my group we divided into two groups. One was business plan group and the other was coding group. I was in business plan group because I like to write and I hate coding. From week three until week 10 we just coded and wrote something about our app into our business plan. In those weeks, we had to do some surveys in order to have some proof that farmers are really faced with those problems and also customers. In week 11, we made two videos, one video was the pitch video and the other one was about app demo. In the last week, we had to submit our app resources and everything that we had done to our judges in the U.S.A.

After two weeks (est.)  Technovation (judges in U.S.A) sent us back the results if we won this competition or not. We were really proud of ourselves because my team was the semi-finalist team representing the region of Asia, New Zealand, Europe and Australia (middle school).  But we were a little bit sad because we weren’t the finalist team, but we still are proud of ourselves that we were the semi-finalist team.

Now, in my school (Liger) we still are continuing to develop our app. Even though we are not the ones that are in the competition, we are still  making the app in order to help change Cambodia. So,  if you are a coding teacher or an expert in that, maybe you can help us to make this app run. I hope that one day there will be a mentor or teacher that can help us.
