2013/2014 Yearly Reflection

I bet every person in every country really want to change their country. So, I really really really want to change my country to become a developed country. As you know, Cambodia is a developing country, so one way that I can help my country is by alleviating poverty. My family always asks me, how will you help our country by alleviating poverty? I say that to help alleviate poverty is not by having a lot of money and then giving it to the poor people. Basically I don’t need money to help my country, but one thing that I really need is education. I have been taking my education to teach other Khmer students, who are nearby my village. I have been teaching them about English and 3D printing (see Entrepreneurship Description).

My money!!

If one time I have 100 million dollars in my pocket, I will build many schools or organizations in Cambodia and I will give the scholarships to the smart students that are poor. Why don’t I give it to the rich, smart kids? I really want to give the scholarships to all the smart students, but the first thing that always comes to my mind is poor kids that are smart, but they don’t have the ability to learn.

Refuse Plastic

Exploration Name: Refuse Plastic

Exploration Dates: May 5 – June 17

Essential Questions:

1. What are solutions to reduce waste?

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of  students: 12

We learned about plastic. We spended a lot of time to discuss about what happens to plastic waste. We found that in Cambodia people liked to burn, bury, throw away and put in the landfill. When we burned rubbish it had co2. Which mean carbon dioxide that the plants took and it let out oxygens out for us, but if it had a lot of co2 it increase the chance that global warming, greenhouse effect and drought could happened. When the world have global warming the ice will melt and some animals will lose their habitats because some animals need cold place to live. Example polar bears needed cold place to live, but if we burned rubbish the cold place like Arctic will melt and then polarbears went extinct. Also, when global warming happened the world got hotter and the oceans got hotter too. If the oceans got hotter the animals that in lived in the oceans will die like jelly fish because they like to live in normal climate.  When the drought happened and then the organisms will die because all organisms need water to stay a life.  Also, when the drought happened the desserts got bigger and it had a lot of winds and sand storms. When we buried it could polluted to the water and soil. So we can’t grew the plants on that soil again. When we threw the rubbish away it could clogged the drain and it could had flood. Why rubbish could clogged the drain because when the rain came the water can’t went through the drain because of  rubbish were clogging already. So when rain came a lot and it can’t went through the drain it could have flooding. when we put the rubbish at the landfill  the problems were taking a lot of space, have leaching chemical and methane gas. Leaching chemical when the chemical came out slowly. Example when the rain came it stayed in the plastic that in the landfill and slowly the chemical came out. This chemical was not good for our health. Methane gas were 21 times  more dangerous than co2.We were researching about solutions that could helped to reduce waste. Our solutions were 3R and 5D. 3R means reduced, reused and recycled. Reduced means used less plastic. Reused means used it again. Example if you have one plastic already don’t threw it away tried to used it again when you went to shopping. Recycle means when you used the plastic already you could put it into factory to made more plastic bags. When you have plastic and you wanted to threw away you have to think could I reduced this plastic. Then you have to think could I reused it and then if you can’t reuse you could recycled it. 5D means define, discovered, design, develop and deploy.

In our class we have other solution. That solution was reusing plastic. We made many things out of plastic for people to use it. Many students had made the bags out of plastic for carried some things when you went to shopping. One student had made flower from the plastic. That flower you could hanged it in front of your house or on the table. Our project were so helpful because all the bags and flowers were the things that people wanted and needed.

When we used plastic it have benefit too. People used plastic as materials. Plastic we could used it in many different climate.  Plastic could packaged food and water and then that food & water will safe. It can keeped the food be fresh. The best reason why people liked to used plastic because plastic doesn’t cost a lot of money.

We had 4 trips that we went to Phnom Penh. The first trip we went to Lucky market to interview the seller about plastic. The second trip we went to BKK market to interview the seller and the buyer about plastic. We went there to observe how people used their plastic.  We had went to Cintri. Cintri was the company that took the rubbish to put at the landfill. The last trip we went to community to ask about plastic and then we took that information to studied. IMG_20140603_153141 (640x480)                IMG_20140612_132656_1 (480x640)

Zoology

Name of Course: Zoology

Learning Facilitator: Jojo

Number of Students: 12

Dates: Jan. 19 – March 27

Days we Meet: Monday and Tuesday

In our class we learned about the animals, for example bacteria is the first organism that have life on Earth. We learned about different kinds of organisms that live in the world, for example in ocean there are different kinds of living things like star fishes and turtles. After that we learned about invertebrates and vertebrates. Invertebrates are the organisms that don’t have a backbone. Vertebrates are the organisms that have backbone. Ex: cow have a backbone, sponge don’t have a backbone. We learned about marine animals and territory animals. Marine are the organisms that live in the ocean only. Ex: Octopus are a marine animal. Territory are the organisms that live on land. Ex: cats are the territory animals. In the water there are a lot of insects. We learned how the insects metamorphosis. Metamorphosis means change. We learned about the metamorphosis are about their life cycle. In class we learned a lot of things most things that we learned are about the mammals. Mammals are the organisms that have a baby in their belly and give their baby a milk like a human.

Asian Politics

Name of Course: Asian Politics

Learning Facilitator: Kimchhel

Number of Students : 9

Dates: March 30 – June 12

In our class we studied about the countries that joined ASEAN. First teacher wrote the names of the countries on pieces of paper. Then each student did the lucky draw to pick the country that they needed to research. When we got enough information we created the presentation on Prezi, Google Presentation or OneNote. After three weeks of doing the research we started to present about the country that we did research about. We talked about the flag, land and population, religion, GDP and some other things. We did some comparisons between some countries to Cambodia. For example in 2003 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than thailand but in 2014 thailand is having more trade freedom than Cambodia. Another example is in 2005 Laos having more trade freedom than Cambodia but in 2014 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than Cambodia.  After everyone did their presentation the teacher introduced more about ASEAN politics. The categories that he taught us were political systems (ex. communism and democracy), the start of ASEAN (why ASEAN started), the history of ASEAN countries (revolution from some powerful countries) and so on. ASEAN started because two reasons. One is because to prevent from war (island conflict) and another reason because to block communist influence (Cold War). In about 19th century France there was a revolution to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and more but not Thailand because they talked with England that Thailand is the border of the country that they do the revolution on. Moreover teacher also taught us that ASEAN divided into two parts. One is Indochina (Thailand, Burma) and another one is Malaysia (island country).

Film-making

Name of Course: Filmmaking

Learning Facilitator: Mr. Jeff

Number of Students: 12

Dates: January 19 – March 27

Days we Meet: Thursday and Friday

Our group studied about filmmaking. When we started to study our Advanced Enrichment we started to study in Internet by watching a video and how many kinds of the tricks that they used to do their videos. When we studied in the Internet already we all started to make one video that talked about the book. When we made the video we were not taking the video in video camera. Our way was we took a picture then we put it in the folder in our computer. Then we used one program in our computer to do our sponser video book. That program is called Movie Maker. Then when we did it already we started a new things. The new thing is that we took a picture of our school then we made it into a video and that video we needed to make it perfect. Some ways that we can make us to have a good video is that our video needed to have three things: 1. good sound on the video 2. picture is clear 3. have a good information. Then our filmmaking thought about a new ideas. Some people thought that they wanted to make a movie about the sticky hand can play the Minecraft in the computer. Some more people said they would like to do a movie about the stickman dancing and one more big ideas was they like to make a movie about the stick girl. We thought that this was very important things so we started to make a movie. The movie like stick men, sticky hand, it just took only a little bit of time but for the stick girl movie it took very long time to make a movie. The title of the movie that talked about the girl was Charlie Lima. This story was really hard to film because we have many scenes to film and one scene maybe took for two days to film because is hard and this story told about the stick girl wanting to be like a human. So it was a little bit related to the people so we needed to make the stick girl look real. That video took us nearly one month to make this movie and until now we not finished yet. Unfortunately the time went so fast so we don’t have enough time to finish our movie but we hope we will. Filmmaking group were really excited because they can study how to make a video and acting and how it hard when we do the movie.

Everyday of our study we were trying hard and working together as a team and everyone was happy. We all were really happy to study about filmmaking because filmmaking is the part of the things that is important for us.

Human History

Name of Course: Human History

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of Students: 7

Days we Meet: Monday/Tuesday

Advanced Enrichment Dates: October 20-January 16

In our Advanced Enrichment we were learning about Human History. Human History means how people began to come to live in the Earth and how many years that people have been living in the Earth. We learned how our ancestors had different from us and how they lived in the Earth. Our ancestors were chimpanzees. Chimpanzees were so different from us because because they walked by four legs and humans were bipedales. Other thing that is different was that the chimpanzees were living on the trees and humans lived in the house on the land. We looked on timelines from zero years until now. We compared from zero years until now how it different. At zero years it was just land with mountains and we learned about what was the first species of human that lived on the Earth. Now it have lots of animals that live on the Earth and now it have technology which before didn’t have. On the timeline we could know what were the first organisms that lived in the Earth. The first organisms that lived in the Earth were bacterias. We learned what was happening before Christ and what was happening after Christ. We had four important keywords. They were evolution, adaptation, reproduce and generation. Each word helped us to study about our Advanced Enrichment. Evolution means how people changed over time. Example: humans have changed their living because at the past humans didn’t know how to grow plants, but over time humans adapted to grow the plants because they didn’t have the food to eat. In our class we talked a lot about generation and how humans changed over generations. We asked our friends how old were they, then we asked about the mother’s age and then we took their mother’s age minus their age. So we could know when was their mother’s age when have baby. This is helpful to know because it helps us to learn about generation. If now I am 12 years old and my mother is 39 years old it means my mother had me when she was 27 years old.

Algebra

Name of Course: Algebra

Learning Facilitator: Jeff

Number of Students: 12

Dates: August 12-January 16

Days We met: Thursday and Friday

Our group learns about Algebra. We started to learn about negative numbers and positive numbers. First we started to draw a number line about negative numbers and positive numbers. The other thing we do is graphing numbers. It is the biggest thing we need to learn. Sometimes on weekends we have a homework to do from the teacher because we need to work hard on graphing it. Other important areas are solving hard problems. Some of the problems that we can not do we can ask the best teacher. He will not tell you a answer. He will show you a way to do it easier, faster and correctly. The goal is know all the key words and solve a lot of hard problems. Here are the key words: Coordinate Grid means the equation about graphing on the papers. Linear Equations mean that used Y=mx+b to graph on the graph papers. Slope means Y=mx+b and mx is a slope. Intercept means the place that one line and one line touch each other. Variables mean the letters the represent the number. Solve means to do the equation.

Psychology

Name of Course: Psychology

Learning Facilitator: Caroline

Number of Students: 13

Days we Meet: Monday/Tuesday

Advanced Enrichment Dates: Session 1: August 12-October 17

Psychology means how someone felt and how they changed their behavior and attitude. We learned about body language. Body language means how someone acted could tell other people by not speaking anything. We looked at the students and thought that students were introvert or extrovert people. Introvert means animals that don’t want to be loud they are just serene. Extrovert means animals that like to do fun things and be loud animals. Other things we learned were about optimism and pessimism. Optimism means thinking a good thing. Pessimism means thinking bad things like some people give up. We learned about positive and negative behavior. Example: when the mom played with the baby she was positive and the baby was happy, but when the mom was negative (it means the mom made the straight face) and then the baby was crying and trying to make the mom play with them. We learned about children’s behavior. When we gave chocolate to children and then we said if you eat chocolate it okay, but if children wait the teacher will give more chocolate. Some of the students ate the chocolate because they thought that the teacher was cheating them. Some of them waited because they wanted more chocolate to eat. We watched three videos. First video we watched was about two monkeys working together to open the box to get the foods to eat. Second video we watched was about human have two monkeys and they gave one monkey a grape and other monkey a cookie and how they behaved. Third video we watched was about two people played cards to cheat the monkey and how it behaved.

Biography

Exploration Name: Biography

Exploration Dates: August 12-September 26

Essential Questions:

(1) What is a biography?

(2) What events have shaped this person’s life?

Number of Students: 13

The first day that we started to learn our Exploration everyone was very excited. Our Exploration studied with teacher Jo, Sambath and Channa. Our Exploration learned about Biography. Biography is studying about the other person’s life. Biography group worked together and shared ideas that we had. For example: we went on a trip and searched the information in computer. When we interviewed we used the strategy to understand about the other person’s life like listening strategy, asking questions and interviewing. We learned how to interview the people, by writing down the notes, how to be a good photographer and a good questionnaire. When we interviewed the people already we not just write down notes in our book. We also learned to make a documentary in the iMovie program. Some people worked on the information that they got too but they did it in Powerpoint program. The reason we wanted to do like this because in the future if we forget what we have we can look in the documentary of the other people life. The people that we interviewed were:Sophal’s uncle (the older person and now he does not do anything because his leg is hurt), Sophal’s sister-in-law (now she not do anything but she works at her house), Sophal  (works in Liger cleaning the school), Simian (works in Liger cleaning the school) and Houy (also works at cleaning Liger too). We had many different people that we interviewed but we only give example some of the people. We took the trip to go to the pagoda near our school to interview the monks in that pagoda. It was so fun for the Biography group. Our group studied only six weeks. Every day during Exploration time the students worked hard and studied new things a lot. In this Exploration all of the students are not lazy, they are active and helpful. We all were really happy to study about biography and now help us have a knowledge and a lot of the experience that we thought.

We went to interview a manicurist. After I got the information I wrote it as a story about her life. We learned how to be a photographer and how to be a writer.

photo 2 (480x640) (480x640) (480x640)

My partner learned how to be  photographer. So, he chose to take a picture of me. So, that he have the experience. Before we took the pictures, we had to find an ideal place and to take the picture.

Forest Ecology

Exploration Name: Forest Ecology

Exploration Dates: Oct 7, 2013 – Nov 19, 2013

Number of students: 12

Essential Questions: (1) What is an ecosystem? (2) What is a natural resource?

An ecosystem is the living things and the non-living things connecting with each other. The one example is algae. Algae take the sunlight for food and fish eat algae and then people eat fish. This is one connection. In Ecosystems class we had a journey book to take notes or write keywords that we don’t know what that word means. In Ecology class the first topic that we learned was tropical forest. We did not just learn only tropical forests but we also learned a lot of kinds of forests like conifers and others. A tropical forest is the forest that has rain a lot all year. We also learned about ecological relationships. Ecological relationships mean that one organism and another organism connect with each other. Ecological relationships are divided in five parts. They are parasitism, commensalism, predator-prey, mutualism and competition. Our Ecology group went to Mondulkiri province to study there. We spent six days at Mondolkiri. We met a lot of people like Bunong people. On Saturday we came back to our school and we shared what we learned.
