Literacy Focus

As we are turning teenager and we are in high school, we concentrate a lot on writing and second on reading in our literacy class. When we answer questions, we have to write in complete sentences and have to give evidence. Here are things that we learn in class that relate to writing: using quotes as evidence, short response, how to answer the questions using Quote Sandwich Guide and PACE (paraphrase all parts of the questions, answer, cite evidence, explain), etc. For reading, we have our own reading group. We can choose the book that we want to read as long as it matches our reading level. Moreover, since we don’t have time to read in class because we only have one hour, so we spend at least 30 minutes at home on our book. In addition, we are not just reading, but also we have jobs to do. In our team, we have to have people responsible for each job, story mapping, summarize, vocabulary finder and research the meaning of each word, and one person in charge of coming up and writing the questions down.

Example of Using Quote as Evidence

quote: “I arrived without knowing how to speak, read, or write English.” [Page 2]

According to the text, we can see author struggles when she explained about classes that she attends at school. In Mexico, she was in honors classes, but not anymore here in America. The author states that “I arrived without knowing how to speak, read, or write English.” This clearly shows how the author struggles with language that she arrives very late to.
